Tiny Bubbles: Hawaii Beer Reads for 7/03/14

Maui Brewing Company New Kihei Brewery

My picks of beer news from around the web that you need to read and my two cents on the topics.  Most of the time it’s Hawaii beer news topics, but every once in a while you’ll find other general beer related topics.

Maui Feed –  A little bit of legislative news.  SB3042 will be signed into law this Saturday by Governor Abercrombie at Maui Brewing Companies new Kihei brewery.  This Senate bill focuses on liquor license classes and was lobbied for heavily by Maui Brewing Company’s owner Garrett Marrero. The new law removes the 30,000 barrel cap for Class 14 Brew Pub licenses, which MBC currently has, and also establishes a new Class 18 license for “small craft producer pubs.”  The Class 18 license allows up to 60,000 barrels brewed per year.  The removal of the 30,000 barrel cap is particularly important to Maui Brewing Company as they prepare to open a new massive brewery in Kihei and expect to exceed that capacity within the first 2 years of operation.  http://bit.ly/1lDdt8c

Paste Magazine –  I’m sort of obsessed with Instagram. It’s my guilty pleasure. I’ve never been huge into social media, but there is something about Instagram and looking at cool photos that just makes me happy. If you love beer then Instagram is a dream because there are so many great beer geeks and breweries posting pics everyday. Maui Brewing Company makes Paste Magazine’s top list of breweries and beer geeks to follow.  http://bit.ly/1mcVHx2

Pacific Business Journal –  A couple of months ago I profiled the Home of The Brave Brewseum, a unique milatary meuseum and beer hall located in the heard of Ka’kaako. Until recently the only way you could access the amazing meusuem filled with some of the most incredible World War II artifacts was via a private tour. This Thursday through Saturday, the brewseum will be open to the public and include tours of the meusuem, beers and dinner.  http://bit.ly/TShH5J

Brookston Beer Bulletin –  My personal rant link. If you love common sense and integrity in journalism you should take the time to read this post.  Many of you may follow the “Food Babe” and maybe have even “signed” her petitions. I, like many other sane, rational and intuitive people, see many issues with her so called reporting and crusades. Over the past year she has made it a point to go after beer producers about their use of mystery ingredients. If you’ve homebrewed or know just a little about beer, you will quickly realize there are many factual errors to her attacks. One of my favorite beer bloggers wrote a great piece about the whole thing and you should read it (and the comments too.)  http://bit.ly/1qU8B40

Beer Street Journal –  How excited are you to get your hands on Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Across America 12 pack? I recently got to try the Torpedo Pilsner collaboration with Firestone Walker and it was amazing. Brilliant German style pilsner with one of the most aromatic noses I’ve ever smelled. I’ve heard that we’ll be getting five 5 gallon kegs to Hawaii so be on the look out and don’t miss this one. Of course, you can also wait for the 12 packs. http://bit.ly/1o5wNMW
