It’s amazing how fast two years can go by and how much a little local brewery can grow in that amount of time. It seems like yesterday we were all eagerly awaiting Honolulu Beerworks to open their doors and fill the very big void of local brewpubs here on Oahu. Now, they are coming up on their second anniversary and hosting a huge party on Saturday, April 9th to celebrate the milestone.
The future is looking bright for Honolulu Beerworks as well. Owner and brewer, Geoff Seideman, recently started construction on a brewery expansion that will allow Beerworks to grow to 4500 barrels a year. Earlier this year they took over the back half of the building that will soon house more fermentors, a new keg station and a canning line. Seideman says he hopes to increase Beerwork’s draft presence around the island and eventually expand to the neighbor islands. He anticipates cans to be released later this year in 6 packs. He has also leased out new warehouse space down the street in Kaka’ako to help expand the barrel aging program. For now, he’s planning on sticking with clean barrel aged beers, but doesn’t rule out experimenting with a few sour beers.
The retro themed anniversary party on April 9th, will feature a slew of special beers that have been cellaring just for this event! Along with a huge line up of beers, they will be raffling off a T&C longboard, a Sector 9 skateboard and an Electra Beach Cruiser. The raffle proceeds support Honolulu Beerwork’s Brewer Scholarship with the Pauahi Foundation. The goal of the scholarship is to provide an aspiring brewer with Hawaiian ancestry the chance to attend brewing school and become a professional brewer. So not only can you win a pretty rad prize, but you’ll be supporting the growth of the local brewing community. We need more local, home grown brewers here in Hawaii.
