I recently discovered that Bay Area based Moylan’s was distributed in Hawaii. This was a joyous moment for me because Moylan’s makes one of my favorite scottish style ales, Kilt Lifter. Scotch ales are malty, bready and slightly sweet with very little to no hop presence. I tend to mainly drink big hoppy IPAs, but from time to time I need a change of pace and love the rich, warming flavors of this scotch ale.
Kilt Lifter has a rich malt base with delicate hops to provide a concentrated and intense flavor. It’s perfect with stews, chili, roasted meats and gravy or as a meal on it’s own. Not only is this a big beer, 8% abv, but it is also a full flavored and filling beer, so you may want to share it with a friend since it only comes in 22oz bottles. It’s best to allow this ale to warm slightly in your glass to enhance its truly bold character. You’ll be surprised at how much the flavor and aroma develops and changes as it warms.
Moylan’s Kilt Lifter can be found at quality craft beer establishments around Hawaii. If your local store doesn’t carry it, ask for it. It’s worth trying!
Kilt Lifter the the favorite at the last two of our beer tastings. Resounding second to your recommendation.
