My picks of beer news from around the web that you need to read and my two cents on the topics. Most of the time it’s Hawaii beer news topics, but every once in a while you’ll find other general beer related topics.
Boston Magazine – Fascinating article about Sam Adam’s founder Jim Koch and how the craft beer movement has long passed his beloved company by. http://bit.ly/1AC3taY
Market Watch – Oh how that term craft is getting more and more confusing. A great interview with “craft” beer pioneers Kurt and Rob Widmer of Widmer Brothers Brewing (currently not considered a “craft” brewery according to the BA) and Gary Fish of Deschutes Brewing. These guys have seen it all and I love their commentary on growth, getting bigger and the misuse of the term quality. http://on.mktw.net/1w0Ody6
NPR – Beer names are cute. I sometimes think breweries have people on payroll to come up with all of these names for their beers. With over 3,000 breweries producing dozens of beers each, legal issues are sure to pop up over naming rights. A cute, creative name can help a beer stand out and competition is getting fiercer, so we can expect to see a lot more letigation in the future. http://n.pr/1s2HKXQ
All About Beer – Three new beers from Sierra Nevada this year. It’s going to be the year of the pilsner! http://bit.ly/1BHNk2a
Brewbound – This post is a few weeks old, but it is one I hope more people will read and at least think about. If you know me well, you know that I’m not a huge fan of the term “craft” and that it has and will continue to cause a lot of issues for the beer world. What is craft? Do you even know how the term was create and the politics behind it? A lot of beer people have very strong beliefs about corporate ownership and hang onto the term craft, but it’s time to really start to examine what it means and if it’s a term worth keeping. http://bit.ly/1wlyw5y
