My picks of beer news from around the web that you need to read and my two cents on the topics. Most of the time it’s Hawaii beer news topics, but every once in a while you’ll find other general beer related topics.
Star Advertiser – Local brewers are awesome and it’s incredibly exciting to see Oahu finally start to catch up with the rest of the country with a number of new ones opening up in the last year. What I love most about small, local breweries and brewpubs is variety! Sure, there’s a ton of great beer on the shelves here, but there are certain styles and adventurous beers that you normally can only find at a small brewery. Waikiki Brewing Company is cranking out some great beers, including a rarely seen English Brown and a fun Jalapeno Amber. Both are exciting and in very different ways. Don’t pass up the English Brown because it’s really fantastic. And the Jalapeno Mouth Amber is just the type of creative beer that you’d expect to find in a small, local brew pub. http://bit.ly/1a0aFxD
The Maui News – Maui Brewing Company is growing and doing it fast. The brewery is on pace to brew over 40,000 barrels of beer this year, almost double what they did last year. They recently announced a new Waikiki restaurant and their not stopping there. Owner Garrett Marrero notes in this article that they are planning on opening a total of four brewpubs in the state (Kahana, Kihei and Waikiki make three.) Hawaii News Now – Ok, so the new growler law has been signed by the Governor and apparently the Liquor Commision isn’t going to add anything to it. So now what? There are a lot of details that need to be worked out by bar, restaurant and retail owners before they can just start filling up your growlers. This reports sheds a little light on the subject, but I’ll have a much deeper and more detailed breakdown of how things may work in the near future. http://bit.ly/15MuIgK
Business Insider – One of the more well written and well researched articles about the potential coming craft beer crunch. The sheer number of breweries and beers available are stagering and at some point small, upstart breweries are going to never be able to break through or make enough money to survive. Most of us drinkers don’t really have any insight into the actual business of craft brewing, but it’s not a super lucrative one unless you get really big. And getting really big requires a shit ton of money (loans, lots of loans.) Great article….you should read it. http://bit.ly/18QjUCi
Fermenting Ideas of Order – Crazy blog name? Well, it’s the Tumblr page of Lagunitas Brewing founder Tony Magee. Since we’re finally getting some Lag to Hawaii I thought I’d share a bit with you. If you have been following Tony on Twitter for the past few years you are already primed to his style of rants, raves and everything else in between. If you haven’t, grab a beer, sit back and clear your mind. Tony is one of the most outspoken and vibrant figures in the craft brewing world. He speaks his mind and recently started this blog to post essays about various issues and topics in the craft beer world (his Tweets were just getting way too damn long to keep up with.)
