Maui Brewing Company announced today that it will be releasing it’s Lemongrass Saison in cans and draft. This is the first Limited Release of 2013 and was brewed in collaboration with San Diego based The Lost Abbey. Only 500 barrels were brewed of which 400 were canned and the rest will be available in draft. Lemongrass Saison is a 5.5% ABV beer utilizing White Wheat, Oats, Pilsner malt, Lemongrass, Citra and Nelson Sauvin hops.
Maui Brewing owner Garrett Marrero explains the collaboration happened when Lost Abbey head brewer Tomme Arthur visited Maui on vacation. “We just had to brew together when he was on island. We have always wanted to can a saison so working with Tomme and Lost Abbey really helped put us on the right path to build a great recipe for the style.” A total of 150lbs of locally grown lemongrass went into the beer that provides bright citrus notes.
I got a chance to try this while at the Kona Brewers Festival and it was my favorite beer of the day. Lemongrass Saison will be a great BBQ’ing and hot day beer. Be on the look out for it at your favorite quality beer store and select craft beer bars across Hawaii.
