Hawaiian Islands Brewing Company has just released it’s newest beer, a double rye IPA. This is a big imperial IPA with over 200lbs of flaked rye added to the mash and a ton of hops. HIBC brewmaster Greg Yount says the beer was inspired by his love for Sierra Nevada’s Ruthless Rye IPA. “I couldn’t make the Sierra Nevada Tap Takeover at Real and was really disappointed that I didn’t get a chance try the Double Ruthless Rye IPA that was there. So we decided to brew our own,” comments Yount. This isn’t Yount’s first time adding rye to his beers. While brewmaster at Brew Moon, Yount added flaked rye to his Orion Red Ale recipe which he says gave the ale another level of the complexity and bite.
Double Rye IPA is currently on draft at Inferno’s Pizza where you can grab a pint or fill up a growler. This is a one time limited release and won’t be brewed again, so get down there and try some. For more on HIBC check out my interview with owner Frank Wenzl.
